Open Source Software Opens Possibilities

Open source software — software that has its code freely distributed and which is supported either collaboratively or commercially — provides new possibilities for web site owners and developers to use technology that would otherwise be unaffordable.

In the next few weeks we’ll be looking at some of the most useful projects out there and how you can use them to improve your site and save money in development. We’ll specifically focus on three categories: content management systems like Drupal and WordPress, javascript and AJAX libraries like jQuery and Prototype, and third-party services from Google, Yahoo and others.

Each category can save hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars in development efforts.
